On June 28, 1992, Chief Daryl F. Gates retired from the Los Angeles Police Department, where he had served for 43 years-the last 14 as chief. Of the more than 8,000 L.A. police officers, only two exceed him in tenure, and for the 48 chiefs that preceded him, only one exceeded him in time served in that position. Gates is widely recognized as the father of D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). He also pioneered the concept and implementation of law enforcement's first SWAT team.

He has written numerous articles on law enforcement and authored the best selling autobiographyChief-My Life in the LAPD.

He has his own radio talk show in southern California and serves as a consultant in a wide variety of protective services.

A graduate of the University of Southern California, Gates has received numerous awards from government and private organizations.
